The liv & livUP Finishes: Turning Innovation into Real Environmental Impact
When it comes to sustainability and eco-responsible practices, we believe meaningful change requires concrete — and measurable — actions. In recognition of Earth Day, we wanted to highlight one of the positive environmental outcomes tied to the innovation behind our liv and livUP finishes, launched earlier this year.
High-performance, healthy flooring — now more eco-friendly than ever.
By improving the scratch and abrasion resistance of our finishes, we reached an important milestone: eliminating protective foam sheets from our flooring packaging.
For decades, placing foam sheets between flooring rows was standard practice. Since the boards are stacked face-to-face, these sheets were used to protect surfaces during transport and prevent marks or abrasion caused by repeated friction. Many wood flooring manufacturers still rely on similar protective materials today.
At Mercier, that extra protection is no longer needed.
A simple change with a major impact
In just one year, this change represents:
- The equivalent of 40 football fields of material avoided, or
- Over 5 million linear feet of material eliminated — the distance from Montréal to Charlotte, North Carolina, or
- A reduction of 153 tonnes of CO₂ emissions, or
- The equivalent of 6 million plastic water bottles, or
- Nearly 20 shipping containers worth of plastic eliminated
Innovating beyond performance
Earth Day is a moment to reflect — but more importantly, to act.
This initiative reflects our vision: to innovate in ways that push industry standards forward while actively reducing our environmental footprint. Because today, product performance is no longer measured only by durability or resistance — it is also measured by its impact on the planet and on future generations.
